The lovely 3rd grade artists created this adorable Birch Tree painting. They started by created a sky full of "cool colors" - green, blue and purple. The sky was done with oil pastel and watercolor paint. After that they learned a scraping technique with black paint for the trees. Once the trees were dry, cut, and attached to their background, shadows were added. Shadows were done with watercolor paint. The result - a beautiful winter scene. Mrs. Martin's 4th grade finished their collaborative project last week. The piece is based on Wassily Kandinsky's Squares with Concentric Circles. Each student created their own square on the piece, 12" x 12" using oil pastels. The overall look is striking and brightens up our hallway at North Central Elementary. Next week they will start their second project on the famous artist. This project, however, will be individual. This tree is a sample of what the 5th graders are working on. The spiral trees, as I like to call them, have been a many-step process. The design of the tree was drawn with pencil first. The spirals were drawn with crayon, oil pastel, and construction paper following that. Then, the big tree was painting with black tempera. This week, we added the lovely watercolor to fill in the majority of the paper. The final step will be a surprise to students next week!
After School Art! Today was our first meeting of the after school art program, and we had a blast. I had a small, but amazing group of enthusiastic artists ready to go. They started creating these lovely oil pastel giraffes! Next week, we'll finalize them. Check out their progress so far :) Also pictured are some finished examples from my after school time at Carney. These lovely landscapes were created by Mrs. Snyder's class. I am very impressed with their abilities, especially for Kindergarten. We drew the landscapes together step by step, and these are now starting to be finished with oil pastel. 2nd Grade students completed (for the most part) their oil pastel creations today. The artwork featured at the left is by a famous artist called Kandinsky. (Click on the image to be linked to an additional info page) We used his concentric circles composition as a change to create art, but also to use our Color Theory knowledge with our design. In the 2nd graders pieces, each set of circles should be using a specific color combination. For example, warm, cool, neutrals, complementary or secondary. I have this lesson planned for all of the lower elementary students. When complete, all of the art will be combined together to create one very large collaborative piece! Sometimes projects don't go quite as I planned. These were supposed to be really detailed owl paintings, but the painting day was filled with mistakes. There were lots of spills, and tears, oh my! SO, the following week I decided to let them have fun and finish them how they pleased - using marker or oil pastel :) The results were cute... even if it wasn't exactly how I'd planned it. Owls were the subject of this adorable creation by my youngest artists - The Young 4's class. These students are 3 and 4 years old, and keep me on my toes. The owls were completed in multiple class periods... focusing on a section each time. The owl shape is filled with various lines. They learned about straight, broken, zig-zag, and wavy. The background of the night sky was filled with cool colors - greens, blues, and purples (Black might have snuck in there, too). Then basic shapes were added to give the owl a face, and wings. I think the results are just cute as a button! Also pictured are the final results of their Mixed Media project. Masking tape was removed to reveal North Central Art in lettering. :) Kindergarten artists are JUST about done with these lovely creations! More details to come after our watercolor painting adds the final touch next Monday! So proud of these little artists :) |
